Limited Editions & Creative Barter
At Songborne & Seabound Press, we value and celebrate art in all forms.
We truly wish money, status, and other capitalist forces had less sway over creative expression. We’ve decided to make our work available both for sale and by what we’re calling “Creative Barter”, an ancient tradition we’re happy to continue.
Each of our books will be available in physical limited edition by Creative Barter only. We’ll send you a copy, but you must, in return, promise to send us a piece of your own art in response to the book. Even if you hate the story and don’t finish reading it, or wish you’d never read it, or even if it’s the greatest book you’ve ever read and it leaves you utterly dumbstruck and paralyzed in awe, or even if you have no particular inclination to make things at all and the thought repels you, you will still owe us some small or large or magnificent or insignificant effort on your part.
A poem about the story, a photo that relates to a character, a painting of a setting in the book, a song about the plot, a fanfic, a costume, a piece of jewelry, a drawing, a comic, a cake, a contraption, a short film, a play, a letter, a dance, a piece of pottery, a sculpture, a collage, a puppet, or perhaps a cosmic quilt made of spells & dreams & the cloth of experience & the thread of expression & the hope of all joy. It doesn’t matter what it is, but you must send or deliver it to us no later than one year after you’ve received the book. Or else.
That’s it. That’s the deal. Your creative response to our work is far more valuable than any money we could collect. We’re lucky enough to be able to keep the lights on without charging money for our work, but hey, if you wanna go crazy you could always order a digital copy AND a limited edition. Ha!
Thanks, dear loves. Let us know if you’re in.
About
Songborne & Seabound Press
was founded by Edith Hope Bishop in Seattle, WA.
Edie is an author, poet, editor, and educator. She sometimes sings, can mess around on guitar and piano, loves to make elaborate costumes for her whole family, and is fond of photography, beachcombing, gardening, and live theater. She grew up in South Florida, spent seven years on the Eastern Seaboard, and has been home in the Pacific Northwest for most of her life. She holds degrees from both Harvard and Columbia Universities and worked for several years as a public school teacher. She’s mom to two teens and one schnoodle. With her partner in life and song, Edie publishes music as Foulweather Bluff. When she isn’t making art, volunteering in her community, or spending cherished time with family and friends, she can usually be found on, in, or near a body of salt water.
